Frost on the grass at 2°C air temperature is not a forecast error. The forecast low describes air temperature measured above the ground in a ventilated enclosure – not the temperature of grass blades, car windshields or plant leaves. Exposed surfaces can cool several degrees below the surrounding air overnight, reaching frost formation conditions while the reported minimum stays above freezing.

Forecast Air Temperature and Surface Temperature Are Different

Standard weather stations measure air temperature at 1.25 to 2 metres height, inside a shaded, ventilated screen. That reading is what appears in a forecast low. Grass, glass and bare soil are measured differently – or not measured at all in most forecasts.

The Met Office distinguishes ground frost from air frost on exactly this basis. Ground frost occurs when the temperature at grass level drops to 0°C or below. Air frost requires the air at standard height to reach 0°C. On a still, clear night, ground frost can develop while air frost never does – the two are separate events.

Clear, Calm Nights Allow Surfaces to Cool Below Freezing

After sunset, exposed surfaces radiate stored heat outward. Clear skies let that heat escape into space without the insulating effect that cloud cover provides. The surface cools – sometimes well below the air temperature a metre above it.

Light winds make the gap larger. Moving air mixes the cold layer near the ground with warmer air above, limiting how far surface temperature can drop. With winds below 5 km/h, that mixing stalls. Cold air in valleys and low-lying areas can deepen the effect, but still conditions drive the cooling – the terrain amplifies what the calm night starts.

Frost Also Requires the Right Amount of Moisture

A surface at -1°C produces visible frost only if water vapour is available to deposit as ice crystals. Two routes get there: water vapour deposits directly onto the surface as ice, or dew forms first and then freezes as the surface cools further. Either way, moisture matters.

Dry air can produce a surface well below freezing with no frost at all – the conditions for ice crystal formation simply aren't met. A night combining low humidity, clear skies and sub-zero grass temperature may leave no visible frost even though the surface temperature dropped below zero.

Why Grass and Car Windows Frost Before Roads

Grass blades and glass lose heat faster than asphalt or compacted soil. The difference comes down to how each material stores and conducts heat – grass has low thermal mass and sits exposed to the sky on all sides, while road surfaces absorb heat through the day and release it more slowly overnight.

Frost on a lawn or windshield while nearby roads stay clear is a common combination, not a sign of uneven forecasting. A car parked under a tree may stay frost-free while one in the open is covered. A hollow in the garden frosts before the raised beds nearby. Surface material, shelter, elevation and local airflow all shift the threshold – sometimes within a few metres.

How to Recognize Frost Risk in an Above-Freezing Forecast

3°C in the forecast low is not the same as 3°C on a still, clear night with no cloud arriving before dawn. The number is identical; the frost risk is not. Clear skies, winds below 5 km/h and a minimum within a few degrees of zero – that combination is what produces frost on grass while the reported temperature stays positive.

Low-lying ground, open fields and areas away from buildings face higher exposure. A frost advisory issued by the local meteorological service is the most direct signal – it reflects exactly this combination of factors rather than the air temperature alone.

Can plants be damaged without visible frost?

Chilling injury doesn't need ice. Tropical species can suffer cell damage at temperatures anywhere below 10°C – the threshold shifts by plant and duration of exposure. A night at 4°C with no frost on the ground can still kill a basil plant or set back a mango seedling.

Is a frost advisory the same as a freeze warning?

Not the same threshold. A frost advisory covers nights when exposed surfaces may reach 0°C while air temperature stays above it – the grass frosts, the thermometer doesn't. A freeze warning means air temperature itself is forecast to drop to 0°C or below.

Can frost remain after the air temperature rises above freezing?

A north-facing wall or the ground under a dense hedge may hold frost well into mid-morning. The air warms; the surface doesn't – not until sunlight reaches it directly. Sheltered patches can stay below zero for hours after everything in the open has cleared.
